Do I Qualify for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program and How Much Can I Save?

To qualify for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program starting 1 July 2025, the following conditions must be met:

• Battery Size: Must be between 5 kWh and 50 kWh usable capacity.

• Installation Timing: Batteries installed since April 6 can qualify, but must not switched on (commissioned) until 1 July 2025.

• System Type: Must be installed with a new or existing rooftop solar system.

• Approved Equipment: Both the battery and installer must be Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved.

• Property Type: Open to homes, small businesses, and community facilities connected to the electricity grid.

• Limit per Property: One rebate per property, but owners with multiple properties can claim separately.

• VPP-Ready: Battery must be capable of participating in a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) although participation is optional.

• State Rebates: You can stack the federal rebate with state-level battery incentives for even more savings.

How Much Can I Save?

Below is what you can expect to save in 2025 on different battery capacities, based on the popular BYD HVM battery system:

Note: Whilst the program offers a maximum rebate of $372 per usable kWh, the real world amount most customers receive after admin and certificate fees may be closer to $330 per kWh, as shown above.

Larger battery systems up to 50 kWh may also be eligible for rebates exceeding $16,000 under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program. It's expected you can install systems up to 100 kWh and still receive the rebate for a 50kWh system.
