Do I Qualify for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program and How Much Can I Save?
Please note: Prices advertised do not include rebates unless explicitly stated.
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is an Australian Government initiative that offers eligible households, businesses, and community facilities a significant discount on the upfront cost of installing solar battery storage systems. It is administered through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) and provides support based on the usable capacity of the installed battery.
Eligibility (2026)
To qualify for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program in 2026, the following conditions must be met:
Battery Size
-
The battery must have a usable capacity between 5 kWh and 100 kWh.
-
Only the first 50 kWh of usable capacity qualifies for the rebate.
Installation & Commissioning
-
Batteries must be installed and commissioned on or after 1 July 2025 and meet all current program requirements.
-
Systems must be tested and certified compliant on or after the eligibility date.
System Type
-
Must be installed with a new or existing rooftop solar PV system.
-
Both grid-connected and eligible off-grid systems can qualify.
Approved Equipment
-
The battery must be on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved list at the time of installation.
-
Inverters and solar panels must also be CEC-approved.
Installation Compliance
-
All wiring, protections, and installation work must meet current Australian Standards and local compliance requirements.
Accredited Installer
-
Installers must be accredited by Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) with the appropriate classifications.
Property & Use
-
One rebate is available per property, but owners with multiple eligible properties can claim separately.
-
For grid-connected systems, the battery must be VPP-capable (participation is optional).
State & Territory Rebates
-
The federal rebate may be stacked with applicable state or territory battery incentives where permitted.
How Much Can I Save? (Updated 2026 Rebate Structure)
The battery rebate is delivered via small-scale technology certificates (STCs) for eligible systems. The discount you receive depends on the STC factor at the time of installation and, from 1 May 2026, the amount of usable capacity and how it falls into the tiered structure.
2026 Rebate Highlights
Jan–Apr 2026
-
Battery STC factor 8.4 per usable kWh — roughly equivalent to ~$300–$335 per kWh after administrative fees.
From 1 May 2026 (New Tiered Rebate Structure)
The rebate shifts to a tiered model where different portions of battery capacity receive different rebate values:
|
Usable Capacity Band |
Rebate Percentage of STC Factor* |
|---|---|
|
0–14 kWh |
100% |
|
14.1–28 kWh |
~60% |
|
28.1–50 kWh |
~15% |
|
(*Relative to the STC factor applied at time of installation.) |
This means the highest rebate per kWh applies to smaller storage capacities, with a tapering value for larger batteries. Larger systems up to 50 kWh will still qualify, but the effective rebate per kWh beyond ~14 kWh is reduced.
What Does This Mean in Dollar Terms?
-
The maximum rebate you receive depends on the STC price and your installation date — earlier in 2026 generally gives higher value.
-
Example: a 10 kWh usable battery installed before May 2026 could receive around $3,000+ total rebate, but after May 2026, larger systems will get progressively less per kWh due to tapering.
Rebate Timing & Value Changes
-
The rebate amount declines over time under the SRES as STC factors step down through to 2030.
-
The adjustments to the schedule are intended to maintain around a ~30% discount on battery system costs even as technology costs fall.
