Solar Inverters- AC and DC coupled

AC and DC coupled inverters are two different ways of connecting solar panels and batteries to a power system:

  • AC coupling means that the solar panels are connected to an inverter that directly converts the DC electricity to AC electricity, which can then be used by the loads. This energy can also be stored in a battery, either through the same (Hybrid) inverter's inbuilt DC battery charger unit or another separate DC coupled battery inverter/charger. 

  • DC coupling means that the solar panels are connected to a MPPT solar charge controller; this DC electricity charges the battery directly.
    An inverter/charger then converts the stored DC electricity to AC electricity for the loads or vice versa for charging the battery (from either a grid supply or another AC power source). 

Both AC and DC coupling have their advantages and disadvantages, depending on the system design, size, and application. Some of the factors that may influence the choice of coupling are:

  • Energy efficiency: DC coupling avoids multiple conversions between DC and AC, which may reduce energy losses and improve system performance.
  • Backup power: Some inverters can provide backup power in case of grid outage, either through a dedicated outlet (PV point) or for the whole household (full backup). The backup power option may depend on the type and size of the inverter and the battery.
  • Oversizing is when the solar panel capacity is higher than the inverter capacity, which can increase the energy yield and reduce the payback time. Some inverters allow for more oversizing than others, depending on their design and cooling system.

    Note: Not all inverters are compatible with all types of solar panels, batteries, or grid standards. It is important to check the compatibility of the components before choosing an inverter.
