Untethered EV Charger – Common Issues / Challenges
Convenience / Hassle - You have to carry the cable and plug it in every time. That’s an extra step vs a tethered charger. After charging, you need to disconnect and store the cable. This can be more tedious, especially in adverse weather (rain, mud) or low light.
Cable Management / Storage - Need somewhere to store the cable safely when not in use—garage, boot of car, etc.—to protect it from damage or theft. Cables can be bulky, heavy, or awkward to coil/carry. If poorly stored, risk of tangling, kinking, or damage.
Risk of Loss / Theft / Damage - Because the cable is detachable and portable, there is a higher risk of misplacing it or having it stolen when the cable is left unattended or stored in insecure areas. Also, greater exposure to damage (e.g. weather, stepping on it, moisture, rodents) when transporting/storing frequently.
Compatibility / Cable Quality Concerns - You must get the correct cable for your EV model (connector type, current rating, etc.). Using an incorrect cable can reduce safety, reduce charging speed, or risk damage. Quality of cable matters; a cheaper or thinner cable may lead to voltage drop, heat, or reduced performance. If you need a longer cable, the cable’s gauge has to be sufficient.
Cost Considerations - The Initial cost might be higher in some cases, because you need to buy the cable separately. Replacement/upgrading of cables adds cost over time. A cable may need replacement if damaged or if you upgrade to a higher power or a different connector.
User Error / Forgetfulness - If you forget the cable, or it’s not with the car when needed, you can’t charge even if the charger is available. Plugging/unplugging frequently may lead to wear and tear on connectors (both on the vehicle side and cable/charger side).
Weather / Environment Exposure - If the cable is carried or stored outside (even temporarily), it can suffer from environmental conditions: water ingress, humidity, UV exposure, dust, etc. Using in rain or wet conditions might be more inconvenient since the user must handle the cable. If inverter/outlet/cable connections are exposed, safety risk if the sealing isn’t good.
Space / Parking Layout Constraints - The charger socket must be close enough that the separate cable can reach comfortably, given the car parking position. If the car is parked a bit off the ideal position, the cable might not reach or might need to stretch awkwardly. If many users share the same charger (e.g. at an apartment or workplace), different parking spots can mean needing different cable lengths; untethered helps, but if the cable is left behind, it's a problem.
Safety / Electrical Risks - Frequent plugging/unplugging may cause connector wear, loose contacts, etc which might increase the risk of sparking or overheating. Poorly maintained cables or connectors could degrade.
Aesthetic / Clutter - Visible cables when plugged in may look untidy. If there is no good place to hang or store the cable, clutter may result.
