Upgrading a Fronius Inverter for Battery Management
Many Fronius inverters, particularly the GEN24 range, are hardware-ready for battery integration but require a software upgrade to unlock full battery management functionality. This upgrade is known as the Fronius UP Upgrade.
Out of the box, a standard GEN24 inverter can operate as a PV inverter, but advanced battery control features are limited. The UP Upgrade activates enhanced hybrid functionality, allowing the inverter to properly manage charging and discharging behaviour when a compatible battery is connected.
Once upgraded, the inverter can:
-
Enable advanced battery control settings
-
Optimise self-consumption
-
Support time-of-use charging strategies
-
Improve coordination between solar generation, household loads and storage
-
Enhance backup readiness (where applicable)

The upgrade is typically performed remotely via Fronius Solar.web. An installer logs into the system, selects the inverter and applies the UP Upgrade licence. The inverter then updates and unlocks the additional battery management features.
For systems planning to add storage, applying the Fronius UP Upgrade ensures the inverter operates as a fully featured hybrid energy management system rather than a standard solar inverter.
